One avocado contains 240 calories, or 10-20 percent of calorie needs per day. Imagine them as fat, not fruit. Healthy heart fat has the same number of calories as fat that clogs arteries, so not excessive is the key to maintaining a healthy body weight.

Then what is a good dose for eating avocados? Research from the American Heart Association suggests that one avocado per day can raise bad cholesterol levels and increase body weight. So it is better to include avocados in daily servings with a small portion. Here's the dose of avocado calories that you can consider:

1/2 fruit = 120 calories
1/3 = 80 calories
Some thin slices = 65 calories

Balance the dose with other vegetables or fruit to maximize other nutrients. If you try to diet with an avocado menu every day, try to combine it with other intake such as whole wheat bread and oatmeal.
